CO2GeoNet - European Network of Excellence on the geological storage of CO2

CO2GeoNet is the European Network of Excellence on the geological storage of CO2, initiated by the EC’s 6th research framework programme in 2004 and integrating Europe’s key research institutes to create a scientific reference body dedicated to the development of CO2 geological storage as a viable option for mitigating climate change. In 2008, CO2GeoNet has been transformed into a legally registered Association, thus reinforcing its identity as the European scientific authority on CO2 geological storage.
CO2GeoNet has gained international recognition through bodies such as the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) and the Greenhouse Gas Programme of the International Energy Agency (IEA-GHG).
 
CO2GeoNet's activities encompass joint research, training, scientific advice, information and communication on CO2 geological storage. They address site selection and characterization, modelling and monitoring CO2 fate and site behaviour, risk assessment ?including possible local impacts on humans and ecosystems, and safety protocols. The network also tackles the issue of public acceptance of CO2 storage, looking for the best approaches to communicate with the general public and organizing dialogue sessions with the different stakeholders based on clear and unbiased scientific data. CO2GeoNet’s forte is to harness a multidisciplinary team of eminent specialists that masters all facets of the geological storage of CO2.
 
In the RISCS project, CO2GeoNet will be the platform for interaction with stakeholders (WP5) and will provide additional expertise on the impacts on marine ecosystems (WP2) and groundwaters (WP3).
 
The third parties of CO2GeoNet carrying out the work are BRGM and NIVA.
 
BRGM, France’s leading public institution in the Earth Science field, has three main activities: scientific research, support for government policy, and international cooperation and development assistance. BRGM has been among the pioneers in research on CO2 geological storage, participating from 1993 in the first European research project on the topic (Joule) and in the first pilots worldwide (Sleipner, Weyburn, In Salah, etc.). BRGM is called upon as national expert or representative by various international authorities, such as the International Energy Agency’s Greenhouse Gas R&D programme (IEA-GHG), the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF), the European Technology Platform on Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (ZEP), and the Scientific Groups of the London and Ospar Commissions for the Protection of the Marine Environment.
In the RISCS project, BRGM will be involved in the organisation of the CO2GeoNet workshops for consultation of stakeholders (WP6) and will bring an additional case study for studying the impacts on groundwaters, the Montmiral natural CO2 field in France.
 
NIVA (Norwegian Institute for Water Research) is an internationally oriented competence centre for water-related research and development activities on environment and resources, NIVA is a private research foundation, and is the largest interdisciplinary applied water research centre in Norway. The NIVA Group, comprising NIVA foundation and three subsidiary consultancy companies Akvaplan-niva in Norway, AquaBiota As in Sweden, and Geomor-NIVA in Poland, has a total staff of 240 and an annual turnover of €22 million. More specifically, NIVA is conducting fundamental and applied research on consequences of environmental pollutions in the marine environment, including oil and its degradation products. NIVA is designing and operating innovative operational observing systems for cost-effective, realtime or offline, monitoring of environmental pollutions, including ship-mounted and at-sea systems. NIVA is also developing web-based information and decision-making systems for effective and user-friendly dissemination of data and research results. NIVA has a long history of participation and coordination of EC projects, including FP5-NoE-CO2GeoNet. NIVA is a partner in the newly established Norwegian Centre of Excellence on CO2 Storage (FME-SUCCESS).
In RISCS, NIVA will contribute to WP2 with conducting experiment with a benthic chamber lander for in-situ and at-depth study of benthic ecosystem response to CO2 exposure.
