Regina - University of Regina

The University of Regina, along with the University of Alberta, is one of the leading research groups in Canada in the area of CCS. The two universities have been in the process of creating a centre of excellence in CCS activities, including capture, storage (both saline aquifer and EOR) and the development of a new centre of excellence in risk assessment with global reach.
Work from the two Universities includes the IEA GHG Weyburn CO2 Monitoring and Storage, considered to be one of the leading projects globally for understanding the integrity of storage in a geological medium. Other projects have been undertaken by one or the other of the partners, these include the Penn West Cardium project, another EOR project, soon to release its final report, the proposed Aquistore Project in Saskatchewan and the new Saskatchewan-Montana project operated in collaboration with Montana universities. Most importantly, is the recently created International Performance Assessment Centre for Geological Storage of CO2 (IPAC-CO2). This centre, funded initially be the Saskatchewan Government and Royal Dutch Shell, is international in scope and intended to provide unbiased advice and research direction in the area of risk assessment.

The University of Regina also provided a lead author for the IPCC Special Report on CCS and provided one of the presenters on behalf of the Special report team at the release of the Special Report in Montreal in 2005.

The two Universities provide significant advice to governments in Canada on the issue of geological storage and provide researchers for a number of projects. Members are frequently called on to provide presentations and advice to industry also. Work has included the identification of storage and EOR opportunities in several states in the US.
