CO2CRC - Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies

The Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) is one of the world's leading collaborative research organisations focused on carbon dioxide capture and storage.
CO2CRC is an unincorporated joint venture comprising participants from Australian and global industry, universities and other research bodies from Australia and New Zealand, and Australian Commonwealth, State and international government agencies. CO2CRC activities include:
  • undertaking leading edge CCS research in Australia and New Zealand
  • developing new economically and environmentally sustainable technologies for decreasing carbon dioxide emissions
  • addressing commercial risks by demonstrating the practical application of carbon dioxide capture and storage technologies through the CO2CRC Otway Project

In April 2008 CO2CRC launched its CO2CRC Otway Project in Victoria. It is Australia’s first demonstration of the deep geological storage of carbon dioxide. The project is of global significance because:
  • it is the world’s largest CCS research and demonstration project: about 100,000 tonnes of CO2 will be injected and stored deep underground
  • it includes an outstanding monitoring and verification program, which international scientists believe to be the most comprehensive of its type in the world.
CO2CRC also undertakes contract research in Australia and overseas and during the past 5 years has completed over 20 assignments, including CCS pre feasibility studies, site characterization studies, economic modeling, quantitative risk assessments and due diligence reporting.
