STATOIL - Statoil Petroleum AS

STATOIL was founded in 1972. Since 2001 it has been listed on the New York and Oslo stock exchanges. 75% of the shares are owned by the Norwegian state. Head office is in Stavanger, Norway. The company’s objective is to carry out exploration, production, transport, refining and marketing of petroleum and petroleum derived products. Also renewables as bio-mass, hydro electricity and bio-fuels are marketed. Total revenue for the Group in 2005 totalled 49.2 G€ (NOK 398 billion). Number of employees at end 2004 was 24 000. Statoil is the leading player on the Norwegian continental shelf. It has had a gradual expansion of its international upstream operations in recent years, and is presently active in 23 countries. The company is the world’s largest net seller of crude oil, and a substantial supplier of natural gas in Europe. Statoil ranks as the largest retailer of petrol and other products in Scandinavia and in the Baltic countries, as well as a significant retailer in Poland.
STATOIL RESEARCH CENTRE has the primary role of research and development in Statoil. Its goal is to produce quality research results, which contribute to the group’s business goals of profitability, safety and environmental protection. Completed in late 1993, the Research Centre, situated in Trondheim, Norway has 6500 square meters of laboratory space and employs around 365 research staff plus services, in all around 420 people.
 
CO2 CAPTURE AND STORAGE qualifications have been developed since the preparations and execution of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) at Sleipner started in 1996. Since then 1 Mt CO2 per year has been injected into the Utsira formation a 1000 meter below the bottom of the North Sea. Statoil initiated the first European R&Dproject SACS – Salina Aquifer CO2 Storage, studying and documenting the behavior of the CO2 in the deep. Since then Statoil has been in the lead for a number of European and Norwegian R&D projects studying the CCS; ongoing are a.o. CASTOR, ENCAP, CO2SINK and CO2ReMoVe. Offshore field SNOHVIT started injecting 0.7 Mt CO2 per year as of April 2008 through a 160 km subsea pipeline and into a deep salt water containing formation. In 2006 Statoil announced plans to build a new gas fired CHP power plant at Mongstad including full CCS. Together with Shell Statoil is studying the “full value chain” Halten CO2 capturing CO2 at a power plant and using it for EOR – Enhanced Oil Recovery. Both projects are planned to start running in 2010-11.
